FLY ON A DOLLAR began with something small, a fruit fly that wouldn’t leave me alone.
It kept flying around my room, constantly pulling my attention away from what I was doing. The more I focused on it, the more irritating it became. Eventually, I realized the fly felt like a physical representation of my own mental state.
It became a symbol for the negative thoughts that can live rent free in your head. Something that may seem insignificant from the outside can consume your attention, distract you from everything else, and leave you feeling constantly uneasy.
Eventually, I killed the fly.
That simple moment gave the piece its meaning. I realized that just because something has taken over my attention doesn’t mean I have to continue giving it power. Sometimes I can confront the distraction, remove it, and move forward.
I painted the fly onto a U.S. dollar bill, transforming that annoying little moment into something permanent and valuable. What began as a distraction became art.
FLY ON A DOLLAR is a reminder that not everything living rent free in your mind deserves to stay there.
